Mid-month news October 2026
Dear Friends,

Missionary colleague Alex Belov, the one on your left, and I, spent four days together at the end of September. We talked about everything (mostly in German). We visited and shared the Gospel at indigenous churches and fellowships, and I helped him learn the Luo language.
God’s Word Speaks Powerfully
Sometimes God’s Word evidently speaks incredibly powerfully to people, without the preacher concerned seeming to have to make any significant effort. So it was, when on 26th September, I joined a small indigenous church, about 2 miles from my home. Give thanks.
Trellis College, 14th October

I was at Trellis college again today. Things are confirmed, that I give a class, to be for ‘all on site students’, 14th October. (That may be just 30 students, only about 6 of which are theological students, as most theology students are at centres far away.) The class is to be for 3 hours. ‘African Culture’ is the theme, to be presented using Swahili. My thoughts are that I endeavour to unpack the contextual dependency of language meaning, as a means to help us to further explore ‘African culture’ in the days ahead, perhaps from January 2027. Prayers valued!
(The title on the flyer can be translated as ‘How to Understand Languages of Africa’.)
Witchcraft is …
I prepared a message that points out the falsity of witchcraft beliefs. Even before I shared it, I began to have doubts. Sure enough, it ‘didn’t work’. The reason it didn’t work, is because my audience could not un-learn a role for witchcraft in deterring bad behaviour.
In a local town, you’ll never see anyone eat anything openly on the street. This is because, should they do so, then other people watching them will give them some kind of stomach ailment using their eyes. So, to eat on the street, while there may be people on the street who are hungry, is considered a bad practice. On the other hand, if you eat out of sight, for example in a café, then it is OK.
It Takes AI to Raise Awareness of the Gospel!
You are probably familiar with developments in AI, having to acknowledge its theological foundations. So, AI may yet bring people to Christ, or at least to realising, that who one takes as God(s) matters.
The days ahead
Please pray also, for a trip to Kampala and back I may be making later this week.
Best wishes,
Jim
